Top-of-the-range waterproof digital compact cameras, capable of underwater shooting to a depth of 14 metres – featuring an array of creative shooting modes

RICOH IMAGING UK, LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the RICOH WG-4 and RICOH WG-4 GPS digital compact cameras. Developed as the latest, top-of-the-range models in the renewed WG-series line-up, these models incorporate exceptional waterproof and shock-resistant performance with high-quality shooting both outdoors and in the water.

The WG-4 and WG-4 GPS offer outstanding waterproof performance — down to 14 metres —and shock resistance against drops from up to two metres. While inheriting the easy-to-hold, non-slip design of the previous models, they provide a choice of new body colours which stand out in the outdoors. They also incorporate state-of-the-art features including a large-aperture, four-times optical zoom lens (with a maximum aperture of F2.0 at the wide-angle end) and a high-sensitivity, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor to deliver high-quality, low-noise images — even in the water, at night and at indoor sporting events where the subject is poorly illuminated. Other significant improvements have been made to upgrade the camera’s operation and performance, including faster AF operation in macro shooting, improved image quality in underwater shooting, and the addition of the USER mode for instant recall of the user’s favourite settings. An array of optional accessories are also available to accommodate active outdoor photography including an adhesive mount and a handlebar mount to securely fix the camera for hands-free shooting, allowing the photographer to take advantage of movie recording features including a dual shake reduction system and Full HD movie recording (1920 x 1080 pixels).

The RICOH WG-4 GPS model also boasts an advanced GPS unit to record position data and travel log data for captured images.  It also provides GPS-related functions including a pressure/altitude/depth gauge and a digital compass to further facilitate outdoor shooting.

Major Features

1. Heavy-duty construction for underwater shooting to 14 metres, for up to two (continuous) hours.

Thanks to their fully watertight construction, the WG-4 and WG-4 GPS assure outstanding waterproof performance to a depth of 14 metres, for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX8 or JIS Class 8). They are also designed to be shock-resistant against falls from a height of two metres,* dustproof (equivalent to IPX6 or JIS Class 6),** cold-resistant against temperatures to  –10°C,** and crushproof against weights up to 100kgf (kilogram force).** All of these features combine to make these new models truly dependable, heavy-duty digital imaging partners in harsh, demanding outdoor conditions.

2. Exceptional image definition, thanks to a large-aperture zoom lens and latest imaging technologies

The high-performance optical zoom lens offers a maximum aperture of F2.0 (at wide-angle end) to capture bright, clear images with minimal noise, even in dimly lit locations. With its four-times zoom coverage from 4.5mm to 18mm (equivalent to approx. 25mm wide angle to approx. 100mm medium telephoto in the 35mm format); this versatile zoom lens accommodates a wide range of applications, from macro shooting of flowers to wide-angle photography of sweeping landscapes. Thanks to the upgraded AF algorithm, the focusing speed in macro shooting has been greatly increased to facilitate close-up applications.

In the Underwater and Underwater Movie modes, the colour rendition and contrast of a captured image is automatically optimised based on the original image data: Red tints and shades, which tend to be lost in underwater photography, are enhanced for true-to-life colour rendition, while the loss of contrast caused by the diffusion of light in the water is effectively compensated for producing sharper, clearer images.

3. A comprehensive selection of shooting modes

Including the Shutter Priority and USER modes, a first for the WG series, the WG-4 and WG-4 GPS provide a total of 29 shooting modes. In the Shutter Priority mode, the camera automatically sets the aperture and ISO sensitivity for a user-selected shutter speed to assure optimum exposure. In the USER mode, the photographer can instantly recall pre-programmed settings for more personalised camera operation. In addition, the Auto Picture mode automatically selects one of 16 different scene modes for a given scene or subject. With a wide choice of shooting modes, the user can always find the ideal mode to suit every subject and occasion.

4. High-performance, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor

The WG-4 and WG-4 GPS come equipped with a state-of-the-art, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which excels in high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics, and assures high-speed readout of image data signals. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine, this image sensor delivers a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with 16.0 effective megapixels. These models provide advanced image processing functions made possible by the latest super-resolution technology to produce sharp, clear, high-resolution images. Both models also offer innovative features including a Handheld Night Snap mode, which automatically captures multiple images of the same night-time scene and produces a single blur-free, composite image from them.

5. Dual anti-shake protection for sharp, blur-free images

The WG-4 and WG-4 GPS’s dual shake reduction system combines an image-sensor-shift-type SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism with a Digital SR mode to more effectively compensate for the adverse effects of camera shake and subject movement in shake-prone conditions, such as photographing poorly lit subjects in ambient light, or when shooting sunset scenes.

6. Six Macro Lights to assist close-up shooting

With six LED Macro Lights positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel for macro shooting, the WG-4 and WG-4 GPS provide brighter, more uniform illumination on the subject when the Digital Microscope mode is selected.*** With the Macro Lights, the user can clearly see a magnified view of a microscopic world often unseen by the naked eye on the camera’s LCD monitor and effortlessly capture eye-catching images. In order to minimise camera shake and subject shake, the instant illumination enhance function allows for the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the illumination level of the Macro Lights at the moment of shutter release. In addition, the Macro Lights can provide other user-friendly features, such as a Self-Portrait Assist mode to check if the subject’s face is safely captured within the picture frame using the blink of an LED lamp, and an LED Lighting mode that uses the Macro Lights as a lighting device in the dark.

7. Full HD movie recording for extended shooting of high-quality movies

The WG-4 and WG-4 GPS provide Full HD movie recording employing the H.264 recording format, allowing the user to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16:9 proportions) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. They also feature a high-speed camera function**** for slow-motion playback of captured movie clips and a fast-forward movie function***** to simplify creative movie techniques. A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also provided on the camera bodies for simultaneous output of Full HD movie clips and sound to external audio-visual devices.

8. Extra-large, high-resolution, wide-frame 3.0-inch LCD monitor

These WG-series models incorporate an extra-large, high-resolution 3.0-inch colour LCD monitor with horizontally extended 16:9 proportions and approximately 460,000 dots. The AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimises annoying glare and reflections to assure a sharp, clear on-screen image, even under the harsh sunshine often found in outdoor shooting. The wide-view design offers a clear view of the monitor from approximately 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, making it possible to check an image from different angles.

9. Built-in GPS functions and pressure/altitude/depth gauge to facilitate outdoor shooting (WG-4 GPS only). The WG-4 GPS comes equipped with a sophisticated GPS module, which automatically records position data and travel log data onto captured images and adjusts the built-in clock to local time. Its pressure sensor and digital compass also allow the user to check the pressure, altitude/underwater depth and direction of a shooting location on the camera’s LCD monitor.

This new model features a compact, lightweight body for outstanding portability and a waterproof, crushproof and cold-resistant construction to ensure trouble-free shooting in a variety of outdoor scenarios.

This waterproof digital compact camera is designed so that anyone can capture outdoor activities with ease. Despite its compact, lightweight body, the WG-20 offers outstanding basic specifications, outperforming ordinary digital cameras and smartphones under demanding outdoor conditions. It is waterproof to a depth of 10 meters; shock resistant against falls from 1.5 meters; and cold resistant against temperatures as low as -10°C. It also features a host of advanced functions, including the RICOH IMAGING-original Digital Microscope mode that magnifies the subject and captures a microscopic world often unnoticeable with the naked eye, in eye-catching images. The WG-20 is fully equipped to accommodate a broad range of applications, from outdoor shooting, to everyday snapshots and business use.

A range of optional camera-mounting accessories will be launched simultaneously with the WG-20, allowing users to securely fix the camera on a bicycle or watercraft. 2. Digital Microscope mode for microscopic observation

The WG-20 features the innovative Digital Microscope mode,*** which magnifies the subject on the LCD monitor for the observation and photography of a microscopic world unseen by the naked eye. Thanks to five LED Macro Lights positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel, the subject is illuminated more brightly and uniformly than in ambient light to facilitate macro shooting. In order to minimise camera shake and subject shake, its instant illumination enhance function allows for the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the illumination level of the Macro Lights at the moment of shutter release. A macro stand is also included as a standard accessory to maintain a minimum focusing distance of one centimetre to the subject during extended observation and shooting.

3. High-quality images made possible by the latest super-resolution technology

In addition to super-high resolution by approximately 14.0 effective megapixels and a state-of-the-art imaging engine, the WG-20 also offers advanced image processing functions made possible by the latest super-resolution technology to deliver sharp, clear, high-resolution images. Because of this, users can effortlessly produce sharp, high-resolution prints with well-depicted details, even when images are enlarged to poster size.

4. HD movie recording

The WG-20’s HD movie recording function makes it easy to capture high-quality movie clips (1280 x 720 pixels, 16:9 proportions, 30 frames per second). It also offers a variety of movie editing functions, such as extracting a still image from movie data and inserting titles at the beginning and end of a movie clip. In addition, a micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is provided on the camera body for simultaneous output of HD movie clips and sound to external audio-visual devices.

5. Large, 2.7-inch LCD monitor

The WG-20 comes equipped with a large, 2.7-inch colour LCD monitor with horizontally extended 16:9 proportions and approximately 230,000 dots. The RICOH IMAGING-original AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimises annoying glare and reflections to assure sharp, clear on-screen images even under the harsh sunshine often encountered in outdoor shooting.

6. 5X optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage

Within its compact body, the WG-20 features a five-times optical zoom lens with a focal-length coverage from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent to approx. 28mm wide angle to approx. 140mm medium telephoto in the 35mm format). This versatile zoom lens comes in handy for a wide variety of scenes and subjects, from wide-angle photos of breath taking scenery to family/group snapshots, and even dramatic telephoto images of distant subjects.

7. Triple anti-shake protection to compensate different types of shake

(1) Pixel Track SR mechanism

When recording still images, this sophisticated shake-reduction mechanism effectively compensates for camera shake by digitally processing affected images.

(2) Digital SR mode****

When the camera detects low-lighting conditions in still-image shooting, it automatically raises the sensitivity as high as ISO 6400, making it possible to use a higher shutter speed to effectively minimise adverse effects of camera shake and subject shake under poor lighting conditions.

(3) Movie SR mode*****

During movie recording, this digital shake-reduction mode effectively compensates for the misalignment of images caused by camera shake through the use of exclusive software to produce beautiful, blur-free movie clips.

This compact, high-performance rear converter not only extends the focal length of the main lens by 1.4 times, but also incorporates the flawless autofocus operation of the main lens, and features a dependable weather-resistant, dustproof construction for all-weather shooting.

Major Features
1. 1.4-times focal length extension for telephoto effect
By mounting this rear converter between the camera body and main lens, the user can extend the focal length by 1.4 times.* Measuring only 20mm in length, its compact, lightweight design allows users easier reach to distant subjects. The minimum focusing distance of the main lens is retained, despite the extended focal length, allowing for the capture of larger, more detailed images of the subject in close-up shooting.
*When this rear converter is mounted, the lens maximum aperture will be smaller (darker) by 1 step.

2. The first PENTAX rear converter to provide AF compatibility
When coupled with an AF lens, the autofocus operation can be performed by the main lens. This rear converter works perfectly with both the camera-driven AF system and the lens-driven AF system (such as the SDM- and DC- series lenses).**
**The camera’s firmware must be updated to the latest version before using the autofocus function. Compatible camera bodies are: K-3, K-50, K-500,K-30, K-5 II, K-5 II s, K-5, K-01, K-7, and K-r. Autofocus is possible with a PENTAX lens having maximum aperture of f/4 or brighter.

3. Weather-resistant, dustproof construction for active outdoor shooting
Equipped with three airtight seals, this model is the first PENTAX rear converter with a weather-resistant, dustproof construction. By combining it with PENTAX’s weather-resistant, dustproof camera body and lens, the user can assemble a dependable digital imaging system that performs superbly even under harsh outdoor conditions, including rain, dust and sand.

4. Exceptional optical performance
With its state-of-the-art optical design, this rear converter promises exceptional optical performance to optimise the potential of the main lens.
