Panasonic have delivered a strong statement of intent to other mirrorless camera manufacturers today with a sensational new still image orientated flagship body, the G9.
Everyone knows how good Panasonic’s mirrorless cameras are; they basically invented the game along with Olympus when they created the Micro Four Thirds standard. However, Panasonic’s last few flagships (the GH3, GH4 and GH5) have been heavily video orientated which certainly isn’t for everyone. These bodies took great still images of course, but they were rarely used in this way. Panasonic have seriously addressed this by making one of the finest stills cameras we have seen for a long time!
The G9 is an absolute beast. Making use of the latest Venus processing engine and a 20.3MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, the G9 has an incredible High Resolution Mode, producing 80-megapixel equivalent images in both JPEG and RAW. Upgraded 6-stop image stabilisation ensures sharp images in any situation. It is also insanely fast. It has the lowest shutter lag of any camera in production at just 0.04 seconds, improved autofocus performance and an insane 20FPS continuous shooting mode, with full resolution RAW images in AF-C.
Still shooting modes we have seen on the GH5 are utilised too, including Post Focus Mode, Focus Stacking Mode, and 4K/6K stills. The G9 also has the largest viewfinder on any mirrorless camera with a 120fps refresh rate and a 0.83x magnification, no blackout, 100% view and a low-light night mode.
It not just the internals that impress us either. The G9 has a pro-standard body, which is splash-proof, dust-proof and freeze-proof. It has a big hand grip with well-placed controls, dual card slots both running the new UHS-II standard along with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.
If you are a serious stills shooter, you must now take a long hard look at the G9 when considering your next camera. For sports, wildlife or landscape photography this now has to be one of the most capable cameras available. I know if I were out all day on a hike, stood trackside at an event or in the forest looking for wildlife, I’d rather have this lightweight body with incredible image quality and speed over most DSLRs, without question.
Panasonic have also announced the perfect lens to accompany such an incredible camera. The LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm f/2.8 Power OIS.
This is the first Panasonic LEICA branded fixed focal length telephoto lens. At 200mm, it gives an equivalent focal length of 400mm in 35mm terms. This is extended to 560mm when used with the included 1.4x telelconverter. Considering it’s optical formula, the new lens is very compact at just 18cm in length and 1.2kg in weight, making day long assignments a breeze. Just like the G9 this lens is splash-proof, dust proof and freeze-proof and features image stabilisation.
Available in January 2018, the Lumix G9 will retail at £1,499 and the Panasonic LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm f/2.8 Power OIS at £2,699. Pre-order the G9 here.
We will have the camera in our Bournemouth store on the 8th December if you’d like to come and check it out! Follow this link to register your interest: Panasonic In Store Day
