The new full frame Sony RX1 has leaked today, a £2000 compact camera?
After weeks of speculation the Sony RX1 has leaked. Everyone expected a full frame pro level Sony Alpha NEX camera, instead there’s this $2700 compact. Designed to take on the likes of the Leica X2 and, presumably, Fuji’s new breed of high eng compacts, the Sony RX1 could hold the key to compact cameras for photographers.
The RX1 boasts a 35mm f/2 Carl Zeiss Sonnar lens and the same 24megapixel sensor as the soon to be announced Alpha 99 full frame SLT camera. Other features are set to include 14-bit RAW processing, ISO range up to 25,600 and 5fps multi burst. Before you start crying out for a viewfinder, there will be the options of optical or electronic viewfinders.
With the future of compact cameras in the balance this could be the way to make them relevant. As sales drop thanks to the quality offered by smart phones the compact camera market is in desperate need of good quality innovation and it’s up to Sony, Canon and Nikon to do some serious work to play catch up.
