Caught Red Handed!

We had a bit of excitement in the shop last week, when we were joined by a film crew from the BBC.

They were filming for a BBC1 programme, Caught Red Handed. The show looks at ways technology, like CCTV or hidden cameras, can help to stop a crime or wrongdoing and can ultimately lead to a conviction. The program is presented by Dom Littlewood and will be aired in the Autumn.

As most of you will know, two years ago we were raided by an organised gang of thieves who made off with tens of thousands of pounds worth of stock. Our in store CCTV assisted in the capture and conviction of these criminals. This show will feature the raids on Castle Cameras, and includes interviews with Castle Cameras owners, Brian and Racheal.

We put our camera on the film crew as they worked! Enjoy the pics and Look out for the episode when it airs!

Ride Your Vespa To Work Day

Today the Vespa Club of Great Britain have organised a day where people are encouraged to ride their Vespas to work, to help celebrate 70 years of Vespa and all it stands for.

Howard and Graham from our Bournemouth branch are both keen Vespa enthusiast owners and both rode their Vespas into Castle Cameras today.

Howard actually commutes daily from Swanage on his 2015 Vespa GTS 125 Super Sport, come rain or shine all year round!

Graham rides a restored 1962 Vespa 150. Being a delicate old girl (The scooter, not Graham) it only comes out occasionally, for day to day duties Graham rides a Scomadi 125.

If you’re a proud Vespa owner, we hope you managed to ride yours into work today, if you did, send us a pic!

Leica Q_Atmosphere

The World’s Best Cameras for Gents (according to our staff)

Everyone is a snapper now. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, everyone is sharing their lives through visuals today.  It’s time to upgrade your visual diary to ‘iconic’ though. We asked our globetrotting, pavement-pounding, bush-lurking male staff members for their recommendations of cameras for work — and play.

The Cutting Edge

Staff Member: Howard Lucas

Shoots: Weddings, weddings and more weddings

Recommends: Fujifilm X-Pro2

A throwback design: discrete, but a sturdy-as-hell, dial-heavy piece that feels as substantial as a proper camera should. Retro in aesthetics only, the X-Pro2 packs the latest next-gen photo technology like a hybrid viewfinder and x-trans3 sensor. Most importantly, taking a photo feels tactile again. Because you know what feels better than tapping a screen? Anything.

£1349 body only

The Traveller

Staff Member: Robin Warren

Shoots: Touristy things, buildings, parks, statues and weird food

Recommends: Sony RX-100 mark IV

Small, slick and perfectly finished, the Sony’s diminutive proportions belie it’s incredible abilities. An unusually large 1″ sensor for better quality images, 4K video, slow motion and premium Zeiss optics in a camera you can slip in your trouser pocket. Rob walked 30 miles around New York with this little gem without breaking his back.

The Hipster

Staff Member: Hugh Thomas

Shoots: Flowers, beards and cats

Recommends: Ricoh GR1v

If digital just rubs you up the wrong way you need to go analogue. One of Japan’s greatest photographers, Daido Moriyama swore by these beauties. No screen, no syncing to your Mac and no goddamn geotagging. The iconic GR demands plenty and rewards handsomely. Insert film, snap, develop and begin your revolution. Film will always look cooler than a filter on your phone.

sometimes available from our used equipment list, from £250

film available from £5.95

The Sartorial Elegance

Leica Q_Atmosphere

Staff Member: Graham Fry

Shoots: Dinner parties, canapés, boutique hotels and suits

Recommends: Leica Q

The Leica Q will make you feel like a king. When only the best will do, there can only be one camera manufacturer to turn too, Leica. In hand it feels more pricey than a bag of uncut diamonds and more solid than the proverbial brick out-house. That emotive red dot will push you to become a better photographer, imagine you are Henri Cartier-Bresson looking for the decisive moment. Just try not to look too smug walking around with your lump of handmade german goodness.

The Super Pro

Staff Member: Part-time studio photography Guru, Stuart Moore

Shoots: Models, girls, fashion, cars and other cool stuff

Recommends: Canon EOS 5D mark III

For the pro lurking inside. This out-and-out photography weapon can record movies in full HD, and take full-frame still images worthy of any magazine cover. Six frames per second means you won’t miss a thing and the masterpiece of tech, the Canon 22MP detail-capturing sensor and Canon lenses will put your snaps a cut above.

£2499 Body and 24-105mm STM lens kit

There’s a real buzz at Castle Cameras!

We had a great surprise yesterday when we started to hear a real buzz out the back of the Winton shop. Within 5 minutes the sky was full of flying insects.  We soon realised it was a swarm of bees!  After a while they started to settle down, on our picnic bench, right next to Alice’s bike!  We used a Sony A6300 with the new Sigma MC-11 converter and a Canon 100-400,  to get a few shots of the little fellows…

We contacted a local swarm collector who popped down and rounded them up to take them off to their new home.  All the buzz is over for now…

Our annual show, the Spring Shoot, has shot! Massive thanks to everyone who came down and helped to make the day such a roaring success.

Tuesday the 17th May 2016 saw the return of our annual interactive event, the Spring Shoot.  Back and better than ever, we had top brands, demos and seminars. It was held across multiple rooms at the Hamworthy Club, nr Wimborne, and once again we brought you all the latest from the biggest names including Canon, Nikon, Leica, Panasonic, Sony and Fujifilm.
There was something for everyone at this year’s spring shoot, we had some great show deals on the day and many of them continued in store and on the website until the weekend.

The winner of the Lowerpro Pro Runner BP 450 AW II, worth £149, was ticket number 124 and,

the winner of the Fotospeed printing paper, was ticket number 213. The prizes can be collected in the Bournemouth store.

Wild Arena were alongside Canon and Manfrotto with some wonderful wildlife to photograph. They were available to chat to, see the creatures and get some great photographs.

South Wilts Falconry were with us flying their beautiful birds of prey from the sports field, We watched these magnificent animals using the latest optics from Leica, Swarovski and Vortex.

DJI were with us at the show, flying their drones. We saw some of the most exciting new products in the photography world!

Starting us off at 10:30 am we were honoured to have award winning professional Fujifilm X-Photographer, Kevin Mullins as our headline speaker. Kevin Mullins is regarded as one of the best wedding photographers in the world. He is also a prolific street photographer and exclusive Fujifilm user.

We had several prizes up for grabs at the show, including a Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 25i worth £55.50 won by this lucky customer at Kevin’s seminar.

Following Kevin at 12:15 pm, representing Fotospeed and Canon, we were very pleased to have Landscape Photographer of the Year, Andy Farrer with us. Andy won the prestigious award for his incredible take on local landmark, the Bats Head

Rounding up the seminar schedule at 2:45 pm, from Nikon we had the fabulous John Clements from Go Photo Training. John is a well regarded photography trainer. His courses always sell out and leave delegates bursting with new ideas on how to improve their photography.

But that is far from it!

In the main hall we also had our speakers corner. Headlining in main hall with not 1, 2 or even 3 but 4 sessions throughout the day join the incredible Ross Grieve from Panasonic. We tried out 4K in our Speakers Corner area with Ross Grieve and Panasonic. We found out how 4K technology can help your photography and allow you to never miss the decisive moment ever again!

Huge thanks to everyone who came and supported the event, including suppliers as well as customers. Look out for a new event in 2017!
