For those jobs that require just an extra step then consider rental as a great way to boost your kit bag without breaking the bank. The best bit? You can charge your clients for the privilege by including rental costs in your bill.

For sometime now we have been offering this great rental service to our customers and would like to make sure you all know about it and can take advantage. We have a huge selection of Canon equipment for hire from a 50mm f/1.4, right up to a Canon 5DSR!

We also have a limited amount of rental equipment available from other manufacturers, including the Sony A7S mark II and the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G. We can also hire our anything you might find on our USED equipment list.

How does it work?

You can rent Digital SLR cameras and lenses from Castle Cameras at our Bournemouth Store, Dorset and our Salisbury store, Wiltshire.

Renting from Castle Cameras gives you the benefit of having a local collection service available from Bournemouth or Salisbury as well as being able to try the kit before you buy it. Creating the account takes about 10 minutes, so you can come in on the day you’d like to rent to set it up. If you do not have an account, you cannot hire out equipment. No exceptions.

You can collect rentals from our Salisbury store, however please let the Bournemouth store know (01202 526606) if you wish to do this, as all hire equipment is held at our Bournemouth branch. Nikon announce new 16-80mm f/2.8-f/4 DX lens

Nikon’s latest DX-format lens is its most interesting and promising yet. Covering a 24-120mm full-frame-equivalent focal length, the lightweight 16-80mm f/2.8-4E features relatively fast apertures, an incredibly useful and dynamic focal length range (already proven with the popular full-frame 24-120mm f/4G ED VR), and professional treatments such as nano coating, an electromagnetic diaphragm, and even a fluorine coating on the front element.

While the electromagnetic diaphragm (a first for the DX format) helps give accurate and effective auto-exposure during high-speed exposure sequences (i.e. on “Continuous High” for action shots), full-fledged vibration reduction helps keep shots steady in the potentially shaky hands of any photographer.

The fluorine coat repels water, dirt, and oils on the front element and is a happy trickle-down addition that I didn’t expect would make it quite so soon to lenses for the mid-sized sensor format.

Finally, Nikon’s “Nano Crystal Coat” is the first of its kind in a DX lens as well and comes from a heritage of providing world-class ghost and flare control on Nikon’s most prestigious line of professional, full-frame lenses (for those without experience with such a lens, it’s actually difficult to get lens flare even when pointed directly into the sun thanks to the nano coat).

What may at first sound like a mess of features turns out to be the recipe for what will likely and easily become Nikon’s most versatile and impressive DX lens. While it won’t come cheap, the 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR is, in fact, a bit of a bargain considering it could easily replace three lenses in any kit.

New Canon 100-400mm lens!

Canon announce the all new 100-400mm!

Finally the wait is over, the perfect companion to the 7DmkII, the 100-400mm has had a complete redesign and is better than ever.

As you can see, gone is the old push pull zoom mechanism, replaced with a conventional twist style. Dramatically improved optical performance through a revolutionary new lens coating technique called ASC and a huge bump in IS performance.

Available early Dec for £1999, Pre-order information to follow shortly.

Tamron release the 150-600mm f/5-6.3 VC USD

Today Tamron have released an exciting new lens, the SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 VC USD

Capture the power and beauty of wild animals, birds, travel destinations, and exciting sports action close-ups with this high-performance 150-600mm long-range zoom. VC (Vibration Compensation) and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) enable you to shoot crisp images of fast-moving, distant subjects handheld, while proprietary Tamron optical technology, including eBAND Coating, works to suppress flare and ghosting for impressively clear and vibrant images.

This lens feels really nice to handle, and is a step up in quality over Tamron’s previous lenses. Some quick test shots we took this morning using a Canon 5Dmk3 show the lens to be very sharp, quick to focus and the image stabliser works very well allowing us to easily shoot at 600mm handheld.

Premium Sigma wide and macro lenses for just £399

We are pleased to be able to offer you two fabulous special purpose lenses from Sigma that have had their price slashed to just £399.

Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro EX DG OS

This superb lens offers premium optical quality, a fast aperture, optical image stabilisation and real 1:1 macro close focusing ability.

Sigma’s medium telephoto macro lens incorporates Optical Stabilisation allowing the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. SLD glass provides good control of aberration and the floating inner focus system ensures high rendering throughout the focusing range. By using Sigma’s APO Tele Converters, it is possible to take photos at greater than 1:1 magnification. HSM ensures a quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus override. This lens has a rounded 9 blades diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas.

I took this lens out at the weekend to see what it could do. It works with both full frame and cropped sensor cameras. I used a Nikon D7100 here to show you  just how close you can get:

Focused at around 1:5, (approx 40cm)

Then the same setup shot at 1:1 (minimum focus distance) this is a full sized image, not cropped in any way!

This ten pence coin is also shot at 1:1

The detail this lens can render is marvellous, this shot is straight out of camera with no adjustments

It also makes a good portrait lens, with great sharpness and beautiful background blur

This great lens is available in Nikon, Canon and Sony fit all for just £399

Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 EX DC HSM

Another premium lens from Sigma, this wide angle lens for cropped sensor cameras offers amazing wide angle shots with superior sharpness.

It’s wide-angle of view from 102.4 degrees produces striking images with exaggerated perspective, enabling photographers to emphasise the subject. ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass, SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass and Aspherical lenses provide excellent correction of all types of aberrations. The Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting and creates high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures fast and quiet autofocus, while allowing full-time manual focus override.

I also took a few shots using this lens and a Nikon D7100. I was out around Poole Harbour for sunset which provides the kind of shooting conditions this lens thrives in. Once again these shots are all straight from the camera with no post production or cropping.

I think you’ll agree it gives impressive results and an interesting perspective over a standard zoom lens. This lens is available in Nikon, Canon, Sony and Pentax fit for just £399

Nikon announce new DX lens 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 VR ED

With a compact and lightweight build, this is a great walkabout lens. Offering wide-angle to telephoto coverage, it’s ideal for entry-level users who want the flexibility to shoot a wide variety of subjects without changing lenses

The Vibration Reduction system minimises the effects of camera shake for blur-free images. Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor enables fast, quiet autofocus
